The transportation services coordinated by the YS Senior Center has been in operation for over 20 years. There is not a clear history as to when the first volunteer was contacted by the Center to see “if they had the time” to offer another person a ride.
It has grown substantially over the decades. In 2018, volunteer drivers made over 2,100 trips to help seniors get to medical appointments, shop for groceries and attend various, local social activities.
This program’s operation is unique to our region and its scale and capacity helps address senior mobility issues. It works only due to the time and energy provided by a number of dedicated volunteers. There is an increasing demand for these services. Until technology offers us “smarter mobility” options for all, neighbors helping neighbors is the most sure way of assuring seniors good health and independent, self-reliant living.
“If you have the time,” please contact us and see what little it takes to help keep our seniors on the move.
