Rock Steady Boxing Monday, noon This class uses non-contact boxing training to combat symptoms of Parkinson's Disease. The rhythmic exercises use everyday objects for resistance and dexterity. Participants at any level of physical ability are adapted to and provided modifications. Socialization and mental challenges enhance the program. This is a hybrid class with some participants meeting in the Great Room and others joining on Zoom. Yoga with Reena Monday & Thursday, 1:30–2:45 pm Yoga inspired movement which slowly builds strength and flexibility, both maintaining our mobility, with additional balance exercises, learned from physical therapy). Movements can be done standing, sitting, or on the floor and hand weights can be added if desired. We take 15 minutes before class time to chat, which we've learned, builds comradery and. supports coming back! Strength Training with Andrew Mondays 3:30–4:15 pm Have fun and stay strong with local fitness favorite Andrew Brody as the instructor for this low-impact, strength-training exercise class. Qi Gong Tuesday & Friday, 1-1:45 pm Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese health care system that integrates physical postures, breathing techniques and focused intention. Western scientific research confirms that Qi Gong reduces hypertension and the incidence of falling. One of the more important long-term effects is that Qi Gong reestablishes the body/mind/soul connection. The group follows an easy DVD on the big screen. In the Great Room
Tai Chi Tuesdays, 5:15 pm & Friday, 11:30 am Dee Arianne Rockwood teaches this gentle form of low or no impact exercise that helps maintain strength, flexibility, and balance. Lowers blood pressure, improves heart health, reduces inflammation and many more benefits. Master Dee Arianne Rockwood is an accomplished martial artists and Tai Chi Master. In 2018, Dee was recognized and honored with the United States Martial Arts Platinum Achievement Hall of Fame/Hall of Heroes Award for 60 years of active learning, teaching, and competing in Martial Arts.
Tap Fit Wednesdays, noon Tap Fit combines tap dance and exercise and can be done standing, holding on to a chair, or seated. Don’t wear open toed shoes. In the Great Room.
Dancing with Parkinson’s Wednesday, 2-2:45 pm For people with Parkinson’s and their spouses or caregivers. This movement class is simple, fun, free-form choreography performed to music, to get the body moving in a way that feels good, enjoyable and socially engaging. The participant works at his/her own potential on that day. Exercises can be modified to suit each individual’s level of comfort and ability. This particular class has been shown to have positive effects on gait speed, strength, balance, and quality of life. This is a hybrid class with some participants meeting in the Great Room and others joining on Zoom. In person participants need to come in the front door, check in, then go to the Great Room. May 31, 2023, 1 pm, on Short Street In conjunction with the National Senior Health and Fitness Day, the Senior Center held a Flash Mob event on Short Street. A huge THANK YOU to Lynn Hardman and Kristyn Andrews for coordinating and choreographing the event. This year’s theme is “Move More to Do More and included participants from Friends Care (red), the Senior Center (orange), the Village of YS (yellow), Mills Lawn School (blue), and the YS Children's Center (purple).
