YELLOW SPRINGS SENIOR CENTER

Let the Bricks Breathe
A Fundraiser for the Yellow Springs Senior Center for Building Improvements

Picture
Sometimes the best of intentions go awry…several years ago the Senior Center Building was re-painted so that it was brilliantly white again, seemingly sealing the bricks against water damage. Unfortunately, in the past few years the paint has caused trouble for our dear old building. There has been moisture entering from the chimneys, flowing through the bricks and trapped by the paint. We sought advice from a restoration expert and have determined that it is time to “Let the Bricks Breathe.” In the next few months, we will have work done to cap the chimneys, clear away the chipping paint and repair damage caused by the water. Over time our building will lose the white paint, aging gracefully.
This year we have completed repair work on gutters and cooperated with the Emporium team to clear out problem trees (one was leaning on our carport) and improve the walkways around the Center. The Greene County Council on Aging has helped fund this work. There is much more to be done. The iron railings have been rusting away, some of them no longer make contact with the pavement. Some of the walkway concrete is eroding, large openings have developed along the side.

A new opportunity, which has been a vision for several years, presented itself during work on the necessary repairs. There is space available to create an extension of the walkway so there is a patio. The photo above shows where the patio will be. This project will allow people to gather outdoors, have increased space for maneuvering around the Center, and restore what is deteriorating.

The total cost of patio construction is $12,000 including repairing all of the railings of the handicap accessible walkway. The Center applied for a grant through AARP which was not awarded, so Senior Center members and the community are asked to support this project. One family has already given $1000 towards the project. Those who contribute $500 or more towards the project will be recognized with custom-made tiles inserted into the patio. Please consider contributing what you can to creating the new patio and needed improvements.
