www.ohiosos.govThe primary election is set for May 5 and the general election will be on November 3rd. Recent amendments to election laws in Ohio have been enacted that affect how the names of registered voters are maintained, when provisional ballots must be cast, and how absentee ballots need to be returned to your local Board of Elections (BOE) office.
To vote in the Primary Election on May 5, you must be registered to vote by April 6.
If you are already registered to vote in Ohio, check to make sure your voter registration is up to date, including your current name and address. It’s important to check that you are registered to vote to ensure that you have not been inadvertently eliminated during a periodic purge of the voter rolls.
Make sure your photo ID is up to date before you cast your ballot.
Absentee ballots must now be received by your county’s BOE by the time the polls close on election day. For the Primary Election, that deadline is May 5 at 7:30 pm.
If you plan to vote by absentee ballot, make your request to the BOE as soon as possible. Absentee ballots can be returned by mail (additional postage is needed), or in person to your local BOE office. In Greene County, the BOE is located at 551 Ledbetter Road in Xenia. Note that only the voter or a close family relative of the voter may return an absentee ballot to the BOE office or to the outside Drop Box.
If you are asked to cast a Provisional Ballot when you vote in the Primary Election:
You will receive a Provisional Ballot Affidavit form and an envelope that outlines the documentation you must provide to the BOE.
You must go to the BOE in your county and provide the needed documents to this office by 5 pm on May 9 to have your vote counted in the Primary Election.
It is vital to provide this information to the BOE by the deadline to maintain your status as a registered voter.
You can check your voter registration at the Ohio Secretary of State’s (SOS) website (ohiosos.gov).
Under the VoteOhio.gov link, you can register to vote online, update your voter registration information including any changes to your home address, and request an absentee ballot. You can also register to vote by completing a paper form which can be obtained at state government offices and public libraries.
You can find more information about voting at the VOTE411.org website which is sponsored by the League of Women Voters (LWV) or by calling the LWV of the Greater Dayton Area at 937-228-4041.
